Wireless Antenna Workshop
Saturday, June 2nd, 14.00
- Feel like being nice and sharing your ADSL-line with the neighbours?
- Want to get internet access in your fresh new squat?
- Like to see if anyone in your area shares their internet connection?
- Learn how a bit of copper tube and wire can extend the range of your wireless network by hundreds of meters!
- Join the workshop and build an antenna out of cheap parts and scrap metal that works just as good (or even better) as the ones you can buy from the shop!
- Little to no experience is required
- Costs will be around 10 euros
Have look at the flyer, print and spread it around!
Be sure to register up front! send a mail to: workshop@puscii.nl
During the workshop we'll be building two types of antennas: directional and omnidirectional ones.
To use these antennas, you need to have a wireless network card with an external plug for connecting an antenna (or if you're brave, you can try to solder a connector onto your card yourself).
* A directional antenna will extend the range of your wireless network very far, but in only one direction.
This is great if you want to stay connected to one distant point, to which you will have to aim the antenna to get the best link.
Perfect for getting your internet connection from those people four houses away across the street.
These antennas are not very suitable if you want your own access point to spread all through the house.
* An omnidirectional antenna doesn't extend the range of your network as far as a directional antenna does,
but it extends it in all directions.
Great if you want to have your own access point spread wider all through the house (or even the ones nextdoor)
or if you want to have something that will allow you to scan the entire area for wireless networks.
Both are fairly easy to make for beginners. Costs for the components of each antenna lie around 10 euros.
